A workshop for people wanting to submit to the Fast Track Approval bill is being held Wednesday evening between 6 and 8pm at the Environment Centre in the Town Hall.

Information, resources templates and discussion are being offered to people concerned about the bill - along with some hot chai.

Submissions to the bill close this Friday 19th April.

Meanwhile, local Hapu say they have yet to meet the new Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations.  Angeline Greensill (Tainui O Tanui) says they are keen to get the message across that negotiations for Whaingaroa should be conducted through local representation and not with Waikato iwi - something they spent considerable effort getting the last Minister, Andrew Little to understand.

Angeline Greensill said: Once we do a treaty settlement ourselves we will be recognised as one of those mandated iwi. But until that happens, we are not listened to really. We just have to keep pushing for our right to negotiate the breaches that happened here in this space. All the [Hapu] along the coast are in the same boat.

The Rahui has been lifted  following last week’s drowning in Raglan. According to a Police statement, four people were successfully rescued from the water but a 5th person who was found on the rocks died, despite the efforts of rescuers to revive them. 

The death has been referred to the coroner and to date Police have not released the name of the individual.

Ohautira Road was  closed on Sunday following an accident that led to the death of a motorcyclist just after 2pm.  Pronounced dead at the scene no further information about the victim has been forthcoming from the police.

The Raglan community has been rallying around The Parlour, the business most affected by the Fire on Bankart St. Anyone  wanting to help can make a donation on givealittle if they look up the page;  “Help Sammy from The Parlour rebuild after her business caught fire”.

In local sports news, it was a tough loss for The Whaingaroa Whai rugby league team on Saturday as they went down 22-10 to Taharoa in wet and windy conditions. Potiki Tupaea,  Tohi Maniapoto, and Renata Tuwhangai were the Most Valuable Players for the day.

The Raglan Roosters football team had a good opening to their season winning 2-1 against POTFC. Asa and Marty scored the goals and special mention was made of Gregor, filling in as keeper in the second half, who stopped a penalty and made another couple of great saves.

In surfing, The 2024 Hurley Boardrider Club Championships were held over the weekend with Raglan’s Point Boardriders coming third. 

Caleb Cutmore, Alani Morse, Luke Hughes, Larry Fisher and Theo Morse were representing Point Boardriders  with Caleb Cutmore coming 3rd in the Mens, Larry Fisher 3rd in the Over 40s and Theo Morse second in the U18s boys - while the team came third in the tag team event.

Mount Maunganui’s Bay Boardriders successfully defended their title against Tairua and our own Point Boardriders. 

Bay Boardriders performance earned the club the right to represent New Zealand at the Usher Cup World Club Challenge being held on the Gold Coast in January 2025.

2022 champions Raglan needed a 5.85 point ride for the win on their final wave but came up short as the swell built and made life tough for each team’s final surfer.  In the end we finished in third place ahead of host team Whangamata who had the wheels fall off in the final after a big day of action.
