Raglan News Bulletin Thursday 29 August

It’s power cut time again in Whaingaroa with 49 properties on Te Hutewai Rd from town to just below Dreamview creamery without power this morning.  Reports indicate that it’s the same fault that was a problem up there a week ago. Residents are hoping the fix will be permanent this time with WEL Networks saying the work should be complete by 11am today.

There was a temporary outage for a larger area down to Aotea Harbour at 8:30am but that was over within an hour.

This outage shouldn’t affect Xtreme Zero Waste who are due to open at 12:30 while Raglan Community Radio has been using it’s emergency transmitter again and there have been reports of a generator being delivered to one of the cell phone towers above Xtreme - so we’re hoping there won’t be the phone outages we had with last week’s power cut.

The Karioi Project has had a successful fundraiser over the last two weeks. Including their givealittle and donations given directly they raised a massive $27,320 of the $30,000 they need to purchase an offroad vehicle. They’re planning to use the vehicle to get their rangers up to the bushline on the Maunga as quickly as possible so they can spend more time checking traplines and less time walking up the hill with heavy loads on their backs.

A team of tertiary health students are visiting Raglan Area School Wednesday next week as part of a program by Hauora Waiwhenua to encourage more young people to pursue health careers in rural areas. International research shows students from rural areas are more likely to return and serve their communities post-graduation – a point crucial in addressing the severe shortage faced by many rural areas in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Old School is asking the community to hold on to its second hand goods until the end of September when they will be having their annual Monster Garage sale. If you’ve got unwanted books, garden items, plants, clothing, baking, sports or fishing gear, or art, you can drop them off from 25-28th September for the sale on Sunday 29th September. The Old School has said that they don’t need any CDs, DVDs, electrical goods or furniture though.

In local sport,  It’s the semi finals of the knockout competition in the Waikato Football Sunday League this weekend but since Raglan got knocked out in the Round of 16 we’ll have to wait for the following weekend to see them play again.

And in the Rugby League it’s the finals of the Women’s Championship, and we do have a team in that game with the Whaingarao Whai Wahine taking on Taniwharau on Sunday, 1pm in Te Awamutu. Taniwharau beat them in their last match but we’re confident a good group of supporters will be travelling over to support the team.
