Indoor Pool at Rangitahi, Pedestrian Safety and Current Council Work Discussed at Recent Community Board Meeting

The recent Raglan Community Board (RCB) meeting was held on Wednesday via Zoom. RCB members have met with Rangitahi developers to view a potential location for a new indoor community swimming facility on the peninsula.

A group of locals, that include a pool building and management expert, are getting the project going and will be looking at forming a trust if the project gets the go-ahead.

An indoor pool has been on the community wishlist for some time and proposals are expected to be presented to the board once designs and concepts are ready.

Safety on Bow Street

During the open forum, local resident Nick Hammond raised the issue of safety for pedestrians and cyclists in town after he was involved in a cycling accident which resulted in a hospital stay and concussion.

His accident occurred while cycling and attempting to dodge a drain grate on the road. Nick was hit from behind by a vehicle towing a boat, through no fault of his own, and he approached the Raglan Community Board to see if safety upgrades could be made to prevent further accidents occurring in the future.

He was particularly interested to see wheel stops installed for cars parking outside SuperValue to prevent cars from hitting pedestrians walking in front of vehicles along the footpath.

Three Waters

Discussions around the management of storm, waste and drinking water through the Three Water’s Reform programme  is ongoing as the Wastewater Discharge Consent community hui was held this week.

Government has taken onboard feedback from the Three Water’s Working Group and last week accepted 44 of the 47 recommendations for changes to its water infrastructure reform programme, improving representation and adding greater community voice and ownership.

The Government is expected to forge ahead with the reforms right up until the election.

Intra-Raglan Bus Service

The search for funding continues for an intra-Raglan bus service that could connect places like Manu Bay and the wharf to the CBD and transport residents around town.

Council staff have written a report and are asking the infrastructure committee at their next meeting for the cash. Without outside funding however, it is unlikely this project will be approved.

Cambrae Road

The council are beginning work on the Cambrae Road Flood Mitigation project. Properties on the lower side of Cambrae Road experience flooding due to low lying land and work is planned to address this issue.

Manu Bay Breakwater Wall

Now that the country is at the orange traffic light setting, stakeholders involved in the Manu Bay Breakwater Wall will be looking to discuss the ongoing issues through an in-person meeting in the upcoming weeks. Currently the breakwater wall is causing safety issues for those that use the boat ramp at Manu Bay.

Jetty Walkway

Work is planned to upgrade the seawall walkway at the end of Wi Neera Street which provides access to the footbridge. Due to the deteriorated nature of this walkway wall, along with considerations for rising sea-levels, plans are underway for an upgrade of the area with potential for an additional handrail and lights.

Matariki Celebrations

The community is gearing up to celebrate Matariki in June this year with the official public holiday set for Friday 24 June. There will be a number of community events happening in Raglan to celebrate Matariki, including a community celebration on Bow St on the 26th, so keep an eye on our What’s On guide for more information!
