Walking Bus Suggested as Solution to Norrie Ave Congestion

Traffic congestion on Norrie Ave during school drop-off and pick-ups has been an ongoing issue in the community for several years and at a recent Raglan Community Board meeting, local resident Sheelah Chalklen suggested organising a ‘walking bus’ for students.

“I’ve walked down Norrie Avenue and the traffic down there – even when it’s not school time  – is quite considerable,” said Sheelah.

During peak school times, congestion on Norrie Ave often sees the road blocked off as parents navigate the intersection, pedestrians and multiple cars.

A walking bus is a form of organised transportation for school children, especially those who live within a reasonable walking distance from their school. It involves a group of children walking together in a supervised manner along a predetermined route to and from school, much like a regular bus route. The walking bus is typically led by adult volunteers, who ensure the safety of the children throughout the journey.

(Listen to the interview at the link below:) The concept of a walking bus aims to reduce traffic congestion around schools and enhance pedestrian safety. Having been involved in a walking bus when she was a mother living in Mt Albert, Sheelah adds that it’s a great way for children to be active and to meet kids from other year groups as well.

A walking bus route usually has designated meeting points or “bus stops” where children join the group at specific times. The ‘driver’ follows a set timetable and follows a specified route where children are picked up to join the walking bus.

As a retiree, Sheelah is an active participant in the community and is keen to organise the walking bus service in conjunction with Raglan Area School but is keenly aware that it requires buy-in from the schools, parents and volunteers.

Sheelah thinks that a walking bus would be a great solution to ease traffic congestion on Norrie Ave and is on the lookout for people that are interested in supporting the idea.
