The Karioi Classic had a hugely successful return in blazing sunshine this weekend. The organisers say there were only a few injuries and that they’re “not sorry” about the grass finish where tired riders have to push through soft kikuya grass on the airfield before hitting the finish line.
First across the line in the 58 km race was Shane Vincent in a time of 1 hour, 58 minutes, and first in the long 85 km race was Alexs Heany in a time of 2 hours 44 minutes. Both riders had a big 5 minute lead on the pack. Last home for the day was Tim Lamb in a time of 5 hours 49 minutes for the 85 km race.
Ross Wallis is the first local to officially put his name forward for the 2025 local body elections; he’s running for a second term on the Raglan Community Board. We know that Lisa Thomson will be running for council again because she announced it publicly months ago – and that’s it. Nominations close on Friday 1st August at midday.
Local Government New Zealand is concerned that there won’t be enough nominations for every position around the country and in Raglan we will need at least 7 nominations for the community board to have a vote. If we get 6 or less, all nominees will automatically be placed on the board and if we get 5 or less then ratepayers will be paying for a by-election no later than 89 days after the election
If we only get one nomination for councillor Lisa Thomson will automatically be elected.
There are already two nominees for Mayor and one other who has publicly announced he will be running.
And for the position of regional councillor we will already have enough nominees to hold an election with four currently listed for the two positions on our Waikato Constituency.
In local sport; The Raglan Roosters returned to their winning ways with a 4 – 2 victory over Komposure FC in Hamilton yesterday. Goals were shared by Felipe, Christian and Asa and the results move them up one spot to 4th on the Waikato Football Sunday League table.
In rugby league, Whaingaroa Whai had a good weekend with the Tane beating Hamilton Hornets by 42 – nil in the first round of the preliminary finals and the Wahine not to be outdone beat the Taharoa Steelers by a whopping 70 – nil for the biggest result of the weekend across the Waikato competition.
