Image from Raglan Roosters FB page We had another weekend of successful Martariki events in Whaingaroa with celebrations held on Friday at the Old School and throughout Saturday with a Hapori Hauora day at Papahua, successfully dispensing 100 hangi packs. The town hall was also busy through the afternoon and into the evening with the Nga Rongoa O Matariki, Medicine of Matariki event at the town hall. There are still a couple more events to go next weekend with a kumara and potato preparation workshop put on by the environment centre and a Matariki Star Trail for 7 to 12 year olds being organised by the Poutama Rites of Passage crew.
Waikato District Council has adopted a new Trade Waste and Wastewater Bylaw that they say will strengthen the protection of the Waikato River and the environment.
Following public consultation, they added a clause that will see mortuary waste separated from the public wastewater network with the intention of it being discharged into the Waikato River.
While the Bylaw has been adopted, there is still a lot of work to do to determine how they’re going to treat and dispose of mortuary waste so there won’t be any immediate changes.
Police have been working with Raglan Area School and the District Council to improve road safety for school students and are suggesting alternative drop-off and pick-up points for parents and caregivers They including the bottom of East Street where students can use the Kaitoke Walkway (although the bottom of Kaitoke St would be closer) or in Raglan West on the other side of the bridge, or even Stewart Street.
They are also suggesting Senior students be picked up after 3:10 pm when the buses have gone and in particular that people stop parking on the grass, yellow lines, bus stops, or in any other way that blocks traffic.
In local sport the Raglan Roosters came out the wrong side of a high scoring game this weekend in Raglan. They lost to Deezciples by 10 goals to 4, a result which will leave them in the bottom half of division 1 of the Waikato Sunday League at a time of the season where getting back to the top appears to be out of the question.
