“Please drive clockwise around the mountain this Sunday” say the organisers of the Karioi Classic cycle race, which has 600 keen cyclists rearing to go for the return of the gut busting race after a four year break.
The long 85km race, which goes as far south as Aotea Harbour starts at 8:30am from Stewart st and the so called short race which is 58 km long starts at 9:30, also from Stewart St – with the first racers expected back at the airfield finish line between 10:30 and 11am.
Both races head across the bridge and up Te Hutewai Road through to Te Mata. The long race does an extra loop down to Aotea Harbour before rejoining the main loop round the mountain that will take the riders out to the coast before making their way home.
There was a wee problem with the registration page on the website this morning but it’s back up and running and will be open till 4pm for people who are still making up their minds.
The Waitangi Tribunal has rejected the application to halt a fast-track bid to mine the seabed off Pātea – but has left the door open if the process turns out to be unfair.
With Trans-Tasman Resources still wanting to mine the seabed off the South Taranaki bight, multiple South Taranaki hapū and iwi sought a Tribunal injunction to block the fast-track application, and an urgent hearing into alleged Crown Treaty breaches.
Tribunal deputy chair Judge Sarah Reeves, however agreed with the Crown that the fast track needed time to be proven fair.
“I do not agree that the risk of significant and irreversible prejudice has crystallised, and the application is premature,” said Judge Reeves.
“However, leave is reserved for the applicants to renew their application if circumstances change”
