Who were we, what were we wearing, driving, watching at the movies? Platform shoes, bell bottoms, polyester and tie dye everything! How much did we earn and what were our penal rates in the workplace? The average hourly rate was $1.80 and it cost $1.70 to go to the movies and we dressed up for the occasion. We drove Chrysler Valiants, Holden Kingswoods and there were plenty of Morris Minors, Datsuns, Vauxhall Victors and Hillman Hunters on the roads. 805 of us had televisions that took pride of place in our lounges but they were still in black and white. Programs started late to mid morning and ended around 10.30 – 11pm with the news and the national anthem – goodnight kiwi was still a while away. M*A*S*H* premiered that year and we watch things like Steptoe and Son, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Dad’s Army, The Brady Bunch and Morcombe and Wise. Top Blockbusters at the flicks were The Godfather and Fiddler on the Roof. Tune in and listen to the tunes of the day and how we lived back in 1972.
