The local Coastguard has had a busy week with two callouts requiring a quick response and a big team effort.
Last Monday evening, a father and daughter out sailing were reported overdue. Three vessels were launched in the dark and with the tide about to turn to an outgoing flow time was of the essence. Fortunately both dinghies and their sailors were located safe and well by 7:15pm.
Yesterday at 1:11pm Coastguard was alerted to another sailing vessel that had capsized, with the sailor struggling to right it. Once again there was an outgoing tide and no time to waste.
Rylock Waikato 2 and a second vessel were launched, and the crew retrieved the sailor and brought them safely back to shore, where they were checked over by Hato Hone St John.
Coastguard organisers are giving a huge thank you to all their volunteers and to their supporters.
All the candidates invited to the Raglan Meet the Candidates election event on Sunday 18th October have confirmed their attendance.
The event in the Town Hall will include candidates from the ACT, National, New Zealand First and Labour Parties and hopefully a yet-to-be-named Green Party Candidate – who are all running for the Taranaki-King Country general electorate.
Raglan Community Radio, organisers of the event are also excited to announce that candidates running for the Hauraki-Waikato electorate have confirmed their attendance. Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke, the current MP and Te Pati Maori candidate and Kingi Kiriona from Labour, ranked at 22 on the Labour Party list, bring the number of candidates attending in Whaingaroa to six.
A petition has been launched calling for better buses for Raglan
The group is calling on Waikato Regional Council to:
- Maintain the Raglan-Hamilton East bus services & ensure it is not removed or reduced in the future.
2. Increase the frequency of buses between Raglan & Hamilton, - Improve connections with other bus & train services,
- And Implement an hourly local Raglan bus service connecting different areas & suburbs of Raglan, as approved by Waikato District Council in 2021.
In local sport our young Waka Ama champions have been giving it their all but haven’t won any more medals in Singapore over the weekend at the World Va’a Sprint Champs.
News broke last week that Mika Kereopa’s Hine Ipipiri team, representing Tirohanga Waka Hoe has won silver in the V12 500m sprint and her crew went on to finish 6th in the J19 V6 1000 and 7th in the J19 V6 500. Meanwhile Taine Drewery’s J19 Te Toki Asoy team managed to crack the two minute mark in their 500m sprint, but it wasn’t enough to get them into the finals.
The New Zealand team has slipped to third on the leaderboard with Hawaii moving into second if you rank by gold medals, but New Zealand has more medals overall. Tahiti is the runaway winning team though with more gold than New Zealand and Tahiti combined.
And the Raglan Roosters have extended their losing streak, going down 11-2 to the Deezciples in Hamilton on Sunday, leaving them firmly on the bottom of Division One of the Waikato Football Sunday League.
