Raglan News Bulletin Wednesday 14th December 2022

Surf Life Saving Northern Region Chief Executive Matt Williams says the organisation’s beach safety messages and call for common sense don’t seem to be getting through to the public, after a boat capsized in large surf off Manu Bay in Raglan early on Sunday morning.

Lifeguards immediately responded to the incident, and attended to the three men. One person was seriously injured and transported to Waikato Hospital. SLSNR fears the outcomes would be much worse had lifeguards not been there to respond so quickly.

The boaties had been warned as they went into the water that it wasn’t safe leading Matt Williams to add ““Surf lifeguards are simply are not, nor have they ever been resourced to be a substitute for the public’s common sense”

A Community Safety Day is happening at the police station this Saturday from 10am until 1pm.

Prompted by community concern, a working group formed locally and are inviting everyone with concerns about safety in the community to come along to the event to share their thoughts and learn what is happening over the summer.

The Raglan Community board is meeting in the town hall supper room at 1pm today, it will be the 2nd meeting of the new board but the last meeting of the year.

Staff are expected to be visiting from the council to talk about Civil Defence and Soundsplash.

There will be updates on the project at the wharf, and hopefully information about designs for the Wi Neera walkway, the fixup of the Manu Bay Breakwater and the new playground at Greenslade road.

A fence is due to be built at Papahua and the last thing on our list is a reminder that there is plenty of money in the discretionary fund after low demand during the covid years - although the Community Charitable Trust is looking to use a fair amount of that for a New Year’s fireworks display.

And that is the Raglan news for Wednesday 14th December 2022
