Raglan News Bulletin Friday 31 May 2024

The majority of Raglan and Whaingaroa properties have full power again this morning with most of the generators having fallen silent overnight.  WEL networks began restoring power overnight to the community in a phased approach that would have caused power cuts for about 15 minutes while the power supply was changed over from generators to the normal source.

WEL Networks anticipate there will still be some without power this morning and that they will be kicking off another concerted effort. It does however look pretty good on the outages map with just a couple of spots left without power for part of Te Uku around Matokatea Road and part of Cogswell Road.

Te Uku School has said they will be open as will Raglan Area School who took delivery of a generator yesterday – although it won’t be needed.

The power outage caused problems for the 24 council sewerage pump stations in Raglan with some overflows occurring as council staff worked hard to bring out generators and sucker trucks to manage the flows. Generators were also bought out to ensure the treated wastewater went out correctly on the incoming tide.

A warning was issued to not collect shellfish in the harbour in case effluent ended up in the water but at 4 o’clock yesterday council was saying that although there had been some small effluent overflows at pump stations they had been cleaned up quickly.

The latest news this morning is that council isn’t aware of any spills into the harbour but that it will take time before they can confirm that everything is OK and that the shellfish collection warning is still in place.

*Updated at 15:09 Friday 31st May: There were spills into the harbour at the Nihinihi Ave and Marine Parade pump stations with volumes in the tens of litres. With such small amounts, the effluent can be quickly and safely diluted within the harbour waterways and there will be no need for testing.

Elsewhere Waikato District Council has announced that they have started livestreaming all council meetings, including committee meetings, in order to increase transparency and community involvement. Here at Raglan Community radio we know John Lawson will be taking full advantage of this new initiative.

Mayor Jacquie Church says they’ll also be livestreaming regular council workshops from June 10.

Mayor Jacqui also said “ Contrary to popular belief, you may even find it interesting”. And we’re sure John Lawson would agree.

And in local sport the Whaingaroa Whai Women’s League team are kicking off their season with a pre-season match against  Hamiton City Tigers tonight at 6pm in Hamilton at Enderley Park.

Meantime the Raglan Roosters football team is playing a round of the Scottish cup tournament in Hamilton at 11am at Kahikatea Park against the Hamilton Masters. Although the Roosters probably have a similar average age we’re expecting them to  have another big victory this weekend. https://raglanradio.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/photo-output_0.JPEG
